This essay describes and comments on a series of seminars that were designed by the author to meet the discourse needs of postgraduate students writing their first thesis or dissertation in English at AUT University, Auckland, New Zealand. In New Zealand, a dissertation is seen as a smaller report on research that has been carried out by a student in a bachelor honours programme, whereas a thesis may be at either master’s or doctoral level.
